I mentioned in the last blog that I have been studying Spanish, but I also have been studying French. And honestly, French is the one I want to learn the most at the moment because I am in love with French pastries and have been dreaming about the day I travel around France, visit and eat at all these fantastic pastry stores and bakeries, discover the cities and/or towns, and share what I learn from that experience with the world. You might think that I can do that without speaking French, but I think speaking their language is very important in developing a personal connection. Besides, I am eager to read all those pastry books in French, too.
Compared to my Spanish, currently, my French is a lot more basic where I still have difficulty forming simple sentences. Let alone having a conversation in French. But I know that all I need is to spend more time learning French. So that’s exactly what I am going to do this month!
I like setting a small but rewarding goal when I am learning a new skill. So, here’s the goal for this time: I am going to have a 20-minute conversation with a French tutor by the end of this month!
Soon after setting this goal, immediately I realized that I have been procrastinating to start talking people in French, even through text. How can I have a conversation with a tutor in French if I couldn’t even have a conversation through text? So that was the first thing I did. I found people on Tandem and sent them an introductory message in French. It is still difficult. Every message I write in French takes a few minutes. But I feel great doing things I am uncomfortable with because that’s how I accelerate my learning. I am so motivated to learn French right now.
I feel like I already made quite a lot of progress after a week. I notice small but important changes such as I am not afraid of reading French posts on Instagram or trying to speak to myself in French, for example. We’ll see how it goes next week, but I am happy that I embarked on this challenge.
